The fireball strike of the Ghast travels in a straight line without any gravity. After a minute of being fired it disappears. Fireballs don't follow players once they are shot, they are slow and easy to deflect if the player strikes them with a projectile.

A ghost that can breathe fireballs - and as scary scenarios go, that's pretty strong. Then just keep holding space and when you reach a room, stop and go forawrd.
If lava is flowing in your way, just dig a tunnel over the lava or just swim up the lava since you're in game mode 1.
