However, the first official Fleet Week took place in New York City in and is generally timed to coincide with the Memorial Day holiday weekend. Each year, we plan many events to show our active-duty visitors, the local public and the national media how the Navy League values and honors those who uphold the traditions of the maritime services.
Our marquee event is an annual welcome reception honoring Commanding and Executive Officers from the participating units. Since , this event has been named in honor of Richard W. Scheuing, a long-time Navy League member and supporter of the sea services who was instrumental in bringing Fleet Week to New York.
